Jeff Magoto

Interaction and collaboration are at the heart of CALL teacher education, yet the Web 2.0 tools themselves that future teachers are being trained on (content/learning management systems, blogs/wikis, ePortfolios) are rarely language teacher friendly. (They're hard to use, text dependent, often configured in ways that sacrifice principles of SLA, and don't easily permit teachers to construct meaningful assessments). This presentation will be a case study of one solution to that problem. ANVILL (A National Virtual Language Lab) is a "language-centric" tool that's being developed for ESL/FL teachers and trainers at all levels. At its core are simple tools for creating, assigning, and assessing oral communication. When finished, ANVILL will be freely available through the Center for Applied Second Language Studies.
